Abstract:
Modern society depends on new molecules to advance medicine, agriculture, and materials, but developing safe and sustainable synthetic strategies
remains a challenge. Nitrogen heterocycles are especially important due to their presence in many pharmaceuticals and natural products.
Haloaziridines are powerful intermediates for constructing diverse nitrogen heterocycles, thanks to their unique reactivity in ring-opening and
transition-metal-catalyzed reactions. They also appear directly in biologically active compounds like Ficellomycin, Imexon, and FR66979,
highlighting the need for efficient synthetic methods.
The FlowHalAzi project addresses this by developing scalable strategies for synthesizing halogen-functionalized aziridines. It will employ zinc-
mediated, photochemical, and electrochemical methods to generate halocarben(oid) species from CHX₃ or CRX₃ precursors and directly incorporate
them into multicomponent reactions. Continuous-flow conditions will be used to allow precise control and facilitate scale-up.

Abstract:
FlowPartDeH2 places flow chemistry at the heart of this strategy to develop innovative synthetic methods for selective partial dehydrogenation and
hydrogenative functionalization of N-heterocycles. N-Heterocycles are crucial scaffolds in medicinal chemistry, forming the core of numerous
pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds. The goal is to develop innovative synthetic methods that can generate and capture reactive
intermediates, which are otherwise too unstable to be isolated under conventional conditions. Leveraging precise control and tunability offered by
flow systems, I aim to generate and intercept reactive intermediates. These intermediates will then undergo downstream transformations, including
earth-abundant metal catalysis and electrochemical activation, to build complex, stereochemically defined 3D heterocyclic frameworks.
The project is strategically structured into four main areas, each addressing a specific challenge. This modular approach allows for dedicated research
into each aspect of the overall strategy.
1. Harnessing of flow chemistry for selective partial dehydrogenation by means of earth-abundant metal catalysis.
2. Instead of metal catalysis, I will apply electrochemistry along with flow chemistry to synthesize partially dehydrogenated products.
3. Hydrogenative or de-aromatic electrophilic coupling will be achieved, where the flow of the reaction will hold the key to halt the reaction in the
intermediate stage. Further, electrophiles will couple to form complex heterocycles.
4. To add extra complexity with annulation/dearomatization sequences, I will add bis-electrophiles, which can further annulate or cyclize to form new
‘3D’ heterocycles.
A dedicated work package for mechanistic studies will be established to support the four research areas, which will ensure the project's innovations
are not just empirically discovered but built on a solid foundation of scientific understanding.

Abstract:
AW-PIE (Resource-Aware Architecture with a Political-Industrial Ecology lens) proposes new frameworks and integrations of a resource model for
architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), targeting the intermediary actors (insurance, banks, real estate investors and governments. In the
EIC-funded RAW project (2023-2027), the resource model aims to overcome the fundamental limits that the natural variability sets within bio-based
material streams for the green transformation of the industry, with a central focus on the alternative materials of waste-sourced and fast-growing
materials, and in particular reclaimed and underused timber. The RAW model links design, analysis and fabrication through a novel computational
infrastructure and embracing the variability of resources, with the ambition to minimise waste, enable circularity, increase carbon storage in building
and allow uptake of currently disregarded classes of bio-based materials and pave the way for novel aesthetic expressions and tectonics in
architecture. This postdoc project (2026-2028) plugs in by researching new identified research questions and non-technical barriers by integrating
social life cycle assessment (S-LCA), life cycle costing (LCC), and political-industrial ecology (PIE) frameworks in the resource model. This project
would include frameworks, teaching materials and expansions of the RAW resource model, which would inform decision making among intermediary
actors in the AEC ecosystem and foster collaboration.

Abstract:
Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have recently gained significant attention in biorefinery research for the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass, owing
to their non-toxic, biodegradable, and recyclable nature. However, despite promising results in biomass treatment, a critical gap remains in the
practical implementation of DES: their recyclability. Limited studies have addressed the regeneration and reuse of DES, raising concerns about their
feasibility for large-scale applications. This study aims to bridge this gap by designing a DES-based biorefinery process that incorporates an effective
DES recycling step, alongside valorization of the spent, lignin-rich DES. The novelty of this work lies in two key innovations: (1) the use of
polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes for ultrafiltration to recover and recycle DES, and (2) the application of the lignin-rich spent DES as a
plasticizer in the production of lignin-starch bioplastics. This integrated approach not only enhances the sustainability of DES-based lignin extraction
but also offers a viable pathway for the production bioplastics suitable for food packaging applications, thereby contributing to the transition from
laboratory research to industrial-scale, circular biorefinery systems.
