Monaco, 28 August 2020
Dear Hydrographers, Dear Friends,
I am now completing the final days of my eight year service at the IHO. I will hand over my
IHO Director position to Rear Admiral Luigi Sinapi, as of 1 September 2020. I joined the
international hydrographic community in 2006 and I have extremely enjoyed every moment of
my hydrographic career over the past 15 years, in particular the last 8 years, as IHO Director.
It has been a great pleasure and honor to serve the IHO Member States and global
hydrographic / maritime community. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to
serve the IHO.
Throughout my tenure, I have particularly tried to raise the visibility and profile of the IHO in
the international maritime community, actively contributed in the IHO Capacity Building
Programme, enthusiastically coordinated the Regional Hydrographic Commission activities
and proactively focused on recruitment of new Member States.
I believe that I have fulfilled my duties and functions to the best of my ability. I consider that,
together with my fellow Directors and staff of the IHO Secretariat, we have achieved the
mission and objectives of the IHO and successfully implemented the annual Work
Programmes over the last 8 years.
Taking this opportunity, I would like thank all IHO Member States for their great support given
to the IHO at large, and to me personally as well. I would particularly like to thank the Chief
Hydrographers, the Chairs and members of the IHO Committees, Sub-Committees, Working
Groups, Regional Hydrographic Commissions and also industry stakeholders for their
continuous support, cooperation and friendship during my service over the past 8 years.
I wish you a great success in your future hydrographic survey and nautical cartographic
activities. I wish fare winds and following seas to this great organization.
I will be in my home country, Turkey after September for my retirement period and continue
to contribute in hydrographic / maritime fields in my capacity. I hope that our paths will cross
again in the future at any event and opportunity. I will be delighted to be contacted at my
private e mail:
[email protected] starting 1 September 2020, if needed.
With my personal regards,
Mustafa IPTES
IHO Director
