Our Ireland lab contacted us about OA-GRA09A samples:
There is two samples that are very fragmented and contain a lot of fines and are not suitable for this method.
Here’s attached picture of these two samples.
The given method (OA-GRA09A) is only suitable for solid and stable samples such as drill core or rock samples. Would it be okay if they use method OA-GRA08c for these two samples instead? It is a SG method based on a prepared, pulverized material using a gas pycnometer - OA-GRA08c. So these two samples had to be prepared in advance of the analysis.

We would like to measure the density of wax-coated samples (OA-GRA09a). As we have not coated the samples in paraffin ourselves, we would like both sample prep and analysis.

I am writing to you from the Geological Survey of Estonia. We would like to perform geochemical analysis on our next batch of phosphorite and black shale samples. The methods for this batch of samples are broadly the same as last time.
I would like to request a price estimate for sample preparation and analysis of a total of 186 samples (full sample list attached).
We have selected the following methods:
(I) For 75 samples, we would like to perform sample prep PREP-31BY and analytical method CCP-PKG03 (with ME-XRF26 replaced with ME-XRF24 and F added to the analyte list)
(II) For 81 samples, we have selected the following methods – PREP-31Y sample prep, and ME-MS61r, C-IR06a and ME-IR08 methods for analysis. Additionally, we request that for these samples, the whole sample is milled to a fine size.
(III) For 22 samples, we have selected PREP-31Y sample prep and ME-MS81D analysis packet.
(IV) For 8 samples, we have selected the OA-GRA08a method.
Furthermore, all samples must be analyzed in a accordance to the sequence ID (see attachement) and all excess material must be shipped back to Estonia.

We are now almost finished the sampling and I would like to get price proposal for sample preparation and geochemical analysis of 151 samples. Please see the sample list in attachment. In addition, I have several minor/ technical questions:
Related to sample shipping:
1. Assuming we accept price proposal we can send the samples and pay when analyses are finished?

2. How sample transportation procedure exactly works? I fill sample Submittal Form and send this this to you and add same documentation to shipment?

Technical questions:
1. What material is used in crusher/grinder movable parts (so I would know with which elements are samples contaminated)

2. What is the minimal amount of sample if we want to and standards in sample patch? In one of your previous email I understood that it was 50 g, but from 2021 lab fee .pdf fail it seems to be 10g for requested analysis?
[David Berglund] Depending on which methods you want to use, but if they also require sample preparation I would say minimum 150-200g.
3. Is it possible that you weigh remaining samples after crushing and pulverizing and provide the data when returning samples?
[David Berglund] Yes, that is now problem, we need to charge a small cost for it.
4. All samples must be analyzed in a according to sequence ID (starting from 1). If you can’t do that then please let me know.
[David Berglund] Yes, we run them in numeric order.

I have few follow-up questions.
1. Can you plese provide an estimate of precision (with miinimum value above it will apply) for CCP-PKG03 package and ME-ICP06 package.
2. There was comment regarding ME-MS8 „Minerals that may not recover fully using the lithium borate fusion include zircon, some metal oxides, some rare-earth phosphates and some sulphides.“ In REE-phosphates do you mean Xenotime, Monazite etc or might there be probleem if there is apatite with substitution of Ca to some REE?

You want complete characterisation package similar to CCP-PKG1, but with ME-ICP06 replaced with ME-XRF24. In fact there is alternative CCP package CCP-PKG3, where whole rock analysis is done by XRF.
Adding F would cost 5.30 euro extra.

My name is Lauri Joosu and I’m writing to You from. The Geological Survey of Estonia. I have heard that you have been on contact with one of my college Johannes. We are working together with same deposit and while he is focusing on black shale my main target is phosphorite. Last week I made an inquiry (see below) in ALS website but I have not received any feedback. Maybe you can answer or forward this mail to correct person:
I’m looking laboratory to measure sedimentary phosphate ore chemical composition. For me it is important
• Major oxides, especially P2O5
• REE’s to understand if the deposit might have also REE potential
• Heavy metals (especially Cd and U)
• F as hazardous in ore processing technologies
Samples will be quatre of core so crushing prior analysis is also needed. Furthermore, all excess material must be shipped back to Estonia. I have about 100 samples with average weight about 4 kg per sample. I have selected from your list of services following packages:
1. PREP-31B
2. CCP-PKG01 but ME-ICP06 is replaced with ME-XRF24
3. Fluorine is measured by F-ELE81a
I have following questions:
• I did not find grain size distribution analysis from your service list. Do you provide this?
[David Berglund] We can perform this at our Metallurgy department in Australia.
• Please comment if my list of analysis is reasonable based on my expectations or would you recommend some changes.
[David Berglund] Se above.
• Please describe the difference in-between ME-ICP06 and ME-XRF24. I understood that for phosphorite study ME-XRF24 is recommended but I did not understand why.
[David Berglund] Main difference is in the analytical technique used. Decomposition is the same, correct – fusion with lithium borate. But in ICP06 fused bead is dissolved and measured by ICP-OES. In XRF26 the bead is cast on polished platinum mould and resulting disc is measured by XRF spectrometer – this method is much more precise.
• Please provide short standard operating procedure for each analyse package (what equipment used how calibrated etc).
I have understood that sample preparation is done in Finland and analysing in Ireland? How samples are shipped in-between laboratories?
[David Berglund] Yes, the sample preparation in this case is done at our lab in Outokumpu and after the sample preparation we are sending a small pulp-split by carrier to our hub-lab in Ireland for the analyses. Please find attached method descriptions.
• Please provide if and if are your laboratory has accredited for requested analyse sets. If you have please provided accreditation certificate.

• If inhouse blank’s and standard are used would you add this information report sheets upon request and provide certified values of standard that you have used.

I am writing to you from the Geological Survey of Estonia. We would like to perform geochemical analysis on our
next batch of phosphorite and black shale samples. The methods for this batch of samples are broadly the same as
last time.
I would like to request a price estimate for sample preparation and analysis of a total of 186 samples (full sample list
attached).
We have selected the following methods:
(I) For 75 samples, we would like to perform sample prep PREP-31BY and analytical method CCP-PKG03
(with ME-XRF26 replaced with ME-XRF24 and F added to the analyte list)
(II) For 81 samples, we have selected the following methods – PREP-31Y sample prep, and ME-MS61r, C-
IR06a and ME-IR08 methods for analysis. Additionally, we request that for these samples, the whole
sample is milled to a fine size.
(III) For 22 samples, we have selected PREP-31Y sample prep and ME-MS81D analysis packet.
(IV) For 8 samples, we have selected the OA-GRA08a method.
Furthermore, all samples must be analyzed in a accordance to the sequence ID (see attachement) and all excess
material must be shipped back to Estonia.

We are now almost finished the sampling and I would like to get price proposal for sample preparation and

Related to sample shipping:
1) Assuming we accept price proposal we can send the samples and pay when analyses are finished?

4) Total amount of samples is about 300 kg we are planning to use euro pallet with riser collars for shipping. Is
it possible that you send back remaining samples by using the same euro pallet with riser collars? If you can
send back the sample by using the same “containers”, then in future we can buy strong plastic boxes for
shipping.

5) Is there something else what I forgot to ask for convenient sample shipping?

Technical questions:
1) What material is used in crusher/grinder movable parts (so I would know with which elements are samples
contaminated)
[David Berglund] Please find attached what our pulverizing bowls and pucks contains.
2) What is the minimal amount of sample if we want to and standards in sample patch? In one of your previous
email I understood that it was 50 g, but from 2021 lab fee .pdf fail it seems to be 10g for requested analysis?
[David Berglund] Depending on which methods you want to use, but if they also require sample preparation I
would say minimum 150-200g.
3) Is it possible that you weigh remaining samples after crushing and pulverizing and provide the data when
returning samples?
[David Berglund] Yes, that is now problem, we need to charge a small cost for it.
4) All samples must be analyzed in a according to sequence ID (starting from 1). If you can’t do that then please
let me know.
[David Berglund] Yes, we run them in numeric order.

1) Can you plese provide an estimate of precision (with miinimum value above it will apply) for CCP-PKG03
package and ME-ICP06 package.
2) There was comment regarding ME-MS8 „Minerals that may not recover fully using the lithium borate fusion include
zircon, some metal oxides, some rare-earth phosphates and some sulphides.“ In REE-phosphates do you mean
Xenotime, Monazite etc or might there be probleem if there is apatite with substitution of Ca to some REE?

Thanks for your enquire, please find answers below in “red”.
You want complete characterisation package similar to CCP-PKG1, but with ME-ICP06 replaced with ME-XRF24. In
fact there is alternative CCP package CCP-PKG3, where whole rock analysis is done by XRF.

My name is Lauri Joosu and I’m writing to You from. The Geological Survey of Estonia. I have heard that you have been
on contact with one of my college Johannes. We are working together with same deposit and while he is focusing on
black shale my main target is phosphorite. Last week I made an inquiry (see below) in ALS website but I have not
received any feedback. Maybe you can answer or forward this mail to correct person:
I’m looking laboratory to measure sedimentary phosphate ore chemical composition. For me it is important
• Major oxides, especially P2O5
• REE’s to understand if the deposit might have also REE potential
• Heavy metals (especially Cd and U)
• F as hazardous in ore processing technologies
Samples will be quatre of core so crushing prior analysis is also needed. Furthermore, all excess material must be
shipped back to Estonia. I have about 100 samples with average weight about 4 kg per sample. I have selected from
your list of services following packages:
1. PREP-31B
2. CCP-PKG01 but ME-ICP06 is replaced with ME-XRF24
3. Fluorine is measured by F-ELE81a
I have following questions:
• I did not find grain size distribution analysis from your service list. Do you provide this?
[David Berglund] We can perform this at our Metallurgy department in Australia.
• Please comment if my list of analysis is reasonable based on my expectations or would you recommend
some changes.
[David Berglund] Se above.
• Please describe the difference in-between ME-ICP06 and ME-XRF24. I understood that for phosphorite study
ME-XRF24 is recommended but I did not understand why.
[David Berglund] Main difference is in the analytical technique used. Decomposition is the same, correct – fusion
with lithium borate. But in ICP06 fused bead is dissolved and measured by ICP-OES. In XRF26 the bead is cast on
polished platinum mould and resulting disc is measured by XRF spectrometer – this method is much more precise.

• Please provide short standard operating procedure for each analyse package (what equipment used how
calibrated etc).
I have understood that sample preparation is done in Finland and analysing in Ireland? How samples are
shipped in-between laboratories?
[David Berglund] Yes, the sample preparation in this case is done at our lab in Outokumpu and after the sample
preparation we are sending a small pulp-split by carrier to our hub-lab in Ireland for the analyses. Please find
attached method descriptions.
• Please provide if and if are your laboratory has accredited for requested analyse sets. If you have please
provided accreditation certificate.

• If inhouse blank’s and standard are used would you add this information report sheets upon request and
provide certified values of standard that you have used.
[David Berglund] You will get a QQ/QC report when we report the assays where you can see our CRM´s used and
the results.
• Please provide price estimate for analysis described below and rough estimate time of analyse (about 100
samples).
