The World Health Organization (WHO) presents its compliments to Member States and

The Inter-Agency and Expert Group (IAEG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
identified WHO as the custodian agency responsible for the compilation and reporting on the
official global indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals related to a wide range of
environment and health related SDG indicators. 7
According to the instructions from the IAEG–SDGs, international agencies responsible for
producing country estimates on SDG indicators are expected to consult with countries on the
interpretation and use of country data in global estimates and reports.

Data request for air pollution (SDG 11.6.2 and SDG 7.1.2)
In view of updating SDG indicators 7.1.2, 11.6.2 and 3.9.1 for the next reporting round,
WHO is hereby seeking Member States data input for some of the air pollution-related SDG
indicators, namely SDG 11.6.2 and SDG 7.1.2. More specifically, country data on air quality
is requested, which is integral to the development of these SDG indicators. Member States are
invited to provide national annual mean concentration data from ground monitoring stations of
particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10)1 and NO2 from 2010 to the most recent year that is available.
These data have been regularly compiled by WHO since 2011 and made publicly available. 2 The
template for adding Member States’ respective national data can be downloaded from the
following link: https://www.who.int/data/gho/data/themes/air-pollution/submitting-official-data.
Member States are also invited to send any relevant national surveys containing
information on cooking, lighting and heating fuels for household use if these are not publicly
available.

Country consultation for SDG 3.9.1, 3.9.2, 7.1.2 and 11.6.2 and nomination of focal persons
for the next data release
In order to ensure that the country consultations are most effective, Member States are
invited to designate one or several focal point(s) for the above-mentioned SDG indicators and
estimates of the burden of disease attributable air pollution and water, sanitation and hygiene in
relevant Ministries (Health, Environment, Energy, Water, National Statistical Office) for further
cooperation and support on this important issue. The role of the focal point will be to review and
provide feedback on the finalization of the SDG estimates and the WHO Air Quality database. 3

Please note that the IAEG–SDGs has requested the United Nations Statistics Division to compile
information on National Statistical Office (NSO) SDG focal persons to ensure that NSOs are duly informed of
international agency interactions with countries when collecting, processing and disseminating data for the SDG
indicators. WHO is therefore urging Member States to ensure coordination with their official SDG focal point when
nominating expert focal persons to review the above-mentioned SDGs.
