IHO CL 20/2019 dated 28 March - The IHO Online Form System for Responses to Circular Letters and Input to IHO Publications (P-5 and C-55). Dear Hydrographer, 1. The joint IHO-IOC GEBCO (General Bathymetric Charts of the Ocean) Project is led by a Guiding Committee (GGC) which includes five members appointed by the IHO and five members appointed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. The current membership of the GGC, as reported in reference A, is provided in Annex A. 2. The IHO Secretariat has been informed that Doctor Graham Allen (UK) having been one of the members appointed by IHO has indicated his intention to step down from the GGC with immediate affect, after five most valuable years of service. 3. Member States are therefore requested to consider nominating suitable experts to fill the resulting vacancy, by completing the nomination form at Annex B and returning it to the IHO Secretariat by e mail ([email protected] ) no later than 15 May 2020 or by preferably using the IHO Online Form System (see Reference C) by accessing the following link: https://IHO.formstack.com/forms/cl_14_2020 4. Criteria for the selection of GGC Members include:  Significant knowledge in bathymetry, especially in state of the art ocean surveying and mapping;  Experience in undersea topographic terrain analysis;  Familiarity in the field of international marine history;  Basic awareness in the marine Earth science disciplines. 5. An appropriate CV, outlining the credentials and experience of the nominee, should be provided in support of any proposed candidature. Please also note that the selected expert is expected to be supported and funded by their organization and to attend the next GGC meeting in January 2021. 6. The Secretary-General, in consultation with the Directors at the IHO Secretariat, will examine the nominations received and, in liaison with the GGC Chairman, confirm the new member of the GGC, or, if required, consult the Member States to assist in the selection. 7. IHO File No. S1/3023 & CBSC-1 CIRCULAR LETTER 15/2020 17 March 2020 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HYDROGRAPHIC SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (USA) SPONSORED BY THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA Eighth Course (10 August 2020 - 5 August 2021) ___ SELECTION OF A CANDIDATE Reference: IHO CL 49/2019 dated 2 October - Master of Science Programme in Hydrographic Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (USA) sponsored by the Republic of Korea. Call for Nominations (8th Course, August 2020 - August 2021) Dear Hydrographer, 1. In the above‐referenced Circular Letter, the IHO Secretariat invited the IHO Member States to consider nominating suitable candidates who would benefit from the opportunity offered by the Republic of Korea (ROK) Programme of Technical Cooperation to enroll in the 2020-2021 session of the Category "A" Master of Science in Hydrographic Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), USA. 2. The IHO Secretariat received applications from seven countries. The Selection Board, comprising representatives from the Republic of Korea, the IHO Secretariat and the USM met on 2 March 2020 via video conference and examined all seven applications. The budget allocation from the Korean fund to sponsor the training for this session will be available for one student. 3. The candidate from Philippines, Mr Marlon Estropia was assessed as meeting all of the necessary criteria and was selected for the session that will be held at the USM from 10 August 2020 (reporting date) to 5 August 2021 (departure date). An individual notification letter has been sent to the selected applicant with detailed instructions. The candidate from Malaysia, Mr Muhamad Khairul Bin Abdullah is the reserve candidate. 4. In accordance with Annex C of the Reference (Timetable for selection of the candidates), the selected candidate must submit all the required documentation to the USM in liaison with Ms Sheila Malley, Coordinator of the Hydrographic Science Graduate Degree Programme, Department of Marine Science (e-mail: [email protected], Tel: +1 228 688 7123, Fax: +1 228 688 1121). Ms Malley is the principal point of contact at the USM. The selected candidate will receive detailed logistic information directly from the USM. 5. It is expected that another opportunity for training at USM will be offered in 2021, thanks to the continuing and generous support of the Republic of Korea. The IHO Circular Letter regarding the call for nominations for the next session is planned to be circulated in September 2020. The Secretariat advises those organizations whose applications were not selected this time, together with other prospective candidates, to begin preparations for next year’s applications now. In particular, prospective candidates should ensure that they have all the necessary documentation well in advance, especially the necessary TOEFL / IELTS and GRE scores. 6.
