GEBCO SUB-COMMITTEE ON UNDERSEA FEATURE NAMES (SCUFN)
VACANCY FOR AN IHO REPRESENTATIVE
Reference: SCUFN Terms of Reference and Rules of Procedure.
Dear Hydrographer,
1. The Secretariat of the GEBCO Sub-Committee of Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) has
been recently informed that Cdr Felipe BARRIOS, from the Chilean Navy Hydrographic and
Oceanographic Service (SHOA), will no longer be available to continue serving SCUFN as a
Member.
2. Article 2.1.1 of the SCUFN Rules of Procedure (see Reference) states that “The Sub-
Committee shall normally consist of 12 members, preferably 6 members being appointed by IHO
and 6 by IOC acting in close consultation”. Art. 2.1.3 also stipulates that “Members of the Sub-
Committee shall be appointed for a five-year period, renewable for one additional five-year term by
the corresponding parent organization…”. The current SCUFN Membership List is provided in
Annex A.
3. Member States are therefore requested to consider nominating suitable experts to fill the
above mentioned vacancy, by completing the nomination form provided in Annex B and returning
it to the IHO Secretariat (
[email protected]) by 15 March 2020. The decision on the appointment of the
new Member is planned to be made no later than at the end of April 2020.
4. Criteria for the selection of SCUFN Members include:
• Profound knowledge in bathymetry, marine geomorphology, especially in the state of the art
of ocean surveying and seabed mapping;
• Experience in topographic terrain analysis;
• Familiarity in the compound field of international marine history and GEBCO;
• Basic cognizance in marine Earth sciences;
• Experience in international meetings in English language;
• Balance between turnover and continuity in the SCUFN Membership and geographical
distribution.
5. A Curriculum Vitae outlining the credentials and experience of the nominee should be
provided in support of any proposed candidate. The IHO Secretariat will then examine the
nominations received and, in liaison with the SCUFN Chair, Dr. Hyun-Chul HAN (Republic of Korea)
and consultation with the IOC Secretariat, will confirm the new member of the SCUFN.
6. Member States are invited to note that SCUFN-33 meeting is planned to be hosted by the
Navy Hydrographic Service of Argentina (SHN) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 9 to 13 November
2020. It should also be noted that the selected expert(s) are expected to be supported and funded
by their organization to participate in SCUFN Meetings while some significant work by
correspondence is needed between plenary sessions.
7. The IHO Secretariat takes this opportunity to thank Cdr Felipe BARRIOS for his active
engagement in SCUFN activities, as well as SHOA for having sponsored him for almost seven
years.
