ACCEPTANCE OF CROWDSOURCED BATHYMETRY ACTIVITIES
IN NATIONAL WATERS OF JURISDICTION

Dear Hydrographer,
1. This Circular Letter provides an update on IHO Member States, which have expressed
support for the activity within their waters of national jurisdiction. I am pleased to announce that
Canada has provided a positive reply with caveats, see Annex A for the current list supporting
Member States, which is also available from the IHO website (https://iho.int/en/csbwg).
2. At the 8th meeting of the Crowdsourced Bathymetry Working Group (CSBWG8) two
clarifications were proposed for consideration by the CSBWG in accordance with the procedures
laid down in reference D and detailed in CSBWG 8/4/1/2. The CSBWG approved the clarifications
for inclusion in B-12 Edition 2.0.3, see Annex B. The revised version of B-12 is available from
the IHO website (https://iho.int/en/bathymetric-publications).
3. As indicated in Reference A, expressions of support and subsequent adoption to the
Positive List can be submitted to the Secretary-General at any time in the future. In this respect,
it is planned that the Secretary-General will call for updates of the position of Member States
regarding CSB activities in national waters of jurisdiction at intervals via Circular Letter.

APROVED CLARIFICATIONS FOR INCLUSION IN B-12 EDITION 2.0.3
1. The additional sentence to be inserted at the end of paragraph 2.1.1:
“Vessels using multibeam for safety of navigation purposes and wishing to contribute their
single track profiles should submit their data to the appropriate coastal state national
Hydrographic Office under cover of a Hydrographic Note.”
2. A clarification on the use of the IHO Collection and Rendering of Hydrographic Data Form
for use by ships of opportunity in Antarctica to be added to paragraph 1on Data Contribution:
“Hydrographic and bathymetric data collected by the National Antarctic Programmes’ ships
and others linked with their activity in the Antarctic, should be forwarded by the National
Antarctic Programmes, or by other means, to the national hydrographic services using the
IHO Collection and Rendering of Hydrographic Data Form available via the IHO website1.
This process and form, which are safety-of-navigation and charting oriented, do not prevent
ships of opportunity from applying guidelines given in B-12, which are multi-purpose
oriented as far as bathymetric data are concerned.”
