Edition 5.0.0 of Publication C-51 – Manual on Technical Aspects of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea – 1982 – was published in 2014 (Reference A). The Manual provides guidance on the technical aspects of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - 1982 (UNCLOS) and has been developed through collaboration with the United Nations Division on Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea (DOALOS). The purpose of C-51 is to ensure maximum international standardization of the technical aspects related to UNCLOS. The maintenance of C-51 is the responsibility of the Advisory Board on the Law of the Sea (ABLOS), which is a co-sponsored group under the auspices of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). 2. After completion and publication of the Edition 5.0.0, it was recognised that work was required on chapter 3 covering nautical charts and projections to reflect the introduction of the revised carriage requirements for electronic navigational charts (ENCs) as laid down in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, as amended, Chapter V. In accordance with its work plan, ABLOS established an Editorial Group to prepare a draft new Edition 6.0.0 of C-51. The draft Edition 6.0.0 contains a comprehensive revision of chapter 3, which addresses the use of both ENCs and traditional paper charts. In addition the opportunity was taken to harmonize, where possible, the Glossary contained in Appendix 1 with the IHO publication S-32 – IHO Hydrographic Dictionary – and the IHO GI Registry to ensure consistency of terminology. 3. The draft Edition 6.0.0 of C-51 was reviewed and recommended by ABLOS at its last business meeting and endorsed by the Hydrographic Services and Standards Committee (HSSC) at its 11th meeting. A copy of the draft Edition 6.0.0 of C-51 (English version) is now available for inspection on the IHO website at Home > Standards & Publications > Download > Draft Publications Awaiting Approval by Member States > C-51 (http://www.iho.int/iho_pubs/IHO_Download.htm#draft). 4.
