Dear Madam, Dear Sir, Let me first introduce to you the PIANC-COPEDEC Conferences : COPEDEC stands for Conference on Coastal and Port Engineering in Developing Countries. The first COPEDEC Conference was organized 1983 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Next editions were held in Beijing, Mombasa, Rio de Janeiro, Cape town … At the occasion of COPEDEC VI, a merger was signed between PIANC, The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure and COPEDEC. The PIANC-COPEDEC X 2020 Conference will be held in Manila, Philippines in November 2020. The active mission of the PIANC-COPEDEC Conferences is ; t o provide an international forum where coastal and port engineers from developing countries can exchange know-how and experience amongst themselves and with their colleagues from industriali s ed countries; and t o enable the developing countries to have a sustainable human resource pool of coastal and port development professionals. The overall theme for COPEDEC X is “Enhancing Waterborne Transport and Sustainable Coastal Development” . As with previous conferences, the emphasis on technical subjects remains. Papers will focus on practical applications, planning, management and environmental aspects of coastal, port and inland waterway engineering in developing and industrialized countries, including documentation of case studies. As in the former editions of PIANC-COPEDEC , the estimated sponsoring for fellowships reaches approx. 15 8 ,000.00 USD considering 75 fellows for the Conference at 2,000.00 USD and 40 fellows for the Short Course’s at 200.00 USD each . I am contacting you and your organisation in this regard, hoping your budget allows to support PIANC-COPEDEC X. Concerning: The PIANC-COPEDEC X Conference in 2020 in Manilla, the Philippines.
Dear Colleagues,
Dear Friends,
As you will remember from the 82nd Council meeting in Lyon, France, once more, special attention went to
the financing of fellows from Countries in Transition for PIANC-COPEDEC X in 2020 in Manilla, the Philippines.
In the past, the fellowships (approx. 150,000USD) were sponsored by the governments of Denmark, the
Netherlands, Germany, UK and Flanders, Belgium. This means that these countries, through their international
development cooperation agencies, raised the required funds. PIANC-COPEDEC IX in Brazil was partly
sponsored by the National Sections and partly by PIANC HQ.
In order to collect the necessary funds for the 2020 edition, HQ is again urged to contact all National
Sections/Qualifying Members, to look for possible sponsoring in their respective countries. In this regard, HQ
would like to propose that the Secretaries and the First Delegates investigate the possibility of (co-)financing
the fellowships of the PIANC-COPEDEC X Conference, e.g. by contacting the authorities/agencies
concerned. Please find attached a draft letter which can help to address possible sponsors and feel free to
contact HQ to provide additional information on the budget.
Furthermore, it is obvious that each Qualifying Member/National Section itself, is invited to sponsor 1, 2, 3 or
more fellows. The budget per fellow is about 2,000USD.
I thank you beforehand for your highly appreciated efforts in this regard and I am looking forward to your
reaction.
