World Marine Aids to Navigation Day 2019
Theme: Marine Aids to Navigation-Successful Voyages, Sustainable Planet
Dear IALA Members,
At its 13th session the General Assembly decided to establish the World Marine Aids to Navigation Day
the 1st July each year, bearing in mind that this is the date of the creation of IALA, with the first
celebration in 2019 (Resolution A13-04).
The principal objective is to promote greater awareness of IALA and its work by bringing to the attention
of the wider public the role of Marine Aids to Navigation and the significance of IALA’s technical work in
enhancing the safety of navigation worldwide.
I would like to thank you all for your very kind collaboration and support with respect to the proposal of a
theme for the 2019 World Marine Aids to Navigation Day.
The various proposals received were introduced to the Council at its 68th session in December 2018. As a
result, the IALA Councillors unanimously suggested and approved Marine Aids to Navigation – Successful
Voyages, Sustainable Planet as the theme for the first World Marine Aids to Navigation Day. The Council
has also decided to inform the next meetings of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee about the
establishment of the World Marine Aids to Navigation Day.
At the 68th session of the IALA Council, the Councillor of Spain indicated that Spain would host a major
event on the 1st July 2019. Following the initiative of Spain to host a major event, it was suggested that
parallel events could be hosted by other National Members as they see fit. All Industrial and Associate
members are also encouraged to participate or plan an event and take advantage of the opportunities of
the World Marine Aids to Navigation Day.
