SUPREME COURT
REPUBLIC OF ESTONIA
Acting Chief Justice Sigita RudÖnaitÖ
Supreme Court of Lithuania

LITHUANIA
Tartu, 26 January 2022
Dear Mrs. Sigita RudÖnaitÖ,
It has become a highly valued tradition that the Baltic Supreme Courts meet annually to
exchange best practices and to strengthen the trilateral cooperation. Unfortunately, due to the
Covid-19 pandemic and many safety measures, we have been postponing this meeting for two
years now. I express sincere hope that the pandemic situation allows us to have a face-to-face
meeting this year and therefore I have the great honour to invite the delegation of the Supreme
Court of Lithuania to the Trilateral Meeting of the Baltic Supreme Courts in Tartu on the
27th:29th of April 2022.
At the trilateral meeting, we could focus on topics of general nature such as the "Latest
Developments and Challenges in the Judiciary", where we could discuss among other things
the issue of finding new law professionals in the midst of the judge's retirement wave, the
benefits and restrictions on holding office ofjudge, the workload of the judiciary, but also the
affect of the pandemic on the court system. Indeed, every court system has its own challenges,
which is why it would be very interesting to hear, what are the current issues for the Lithuanian
and Latvian judiciary and to compare our similarities and differences. Additionally, another
part of the meeting could be devoted to two specific matters - civil and criminal law. As we
share a similar historical background, some issues and case law of the Supreme Courts of the
Baltic States often have common point of views and this meeting provides us an excellent
opportunity to deepen our collaboration and share relevant case law of Civil and Criminal
Chambers of our courts. It would be most helpful for the fruitful discussion, if representatives
of the courts would prepare an approximately 10 to l5 minutes long presentation about the three
above-mentioned topics. Please do not hesitate to recommend your own topics of interest.
We would kindly suggest to hold this trilateral meeting in English and therefore translation into
national languages will not be provided. The Supreme Court of Estonia will gladly cover the
costs for your delegation's accommodation in Tartu. Depending on whether you will be
