At its 10th meeting in May 2018 and as part of its programme of work, the Hydrographic Services and Standards Committee (HSSC) endorsed the Edition 1.0.0 of Product Specifications S-122 – Marine Protected Areas and S-123 – Radio Services, as proposed by the Nautical Information Provision Working Group. This information was reported in Reference A (see paragraph 5) and will be highlighted at the 2nd meeting of the IHO Council in October (see Reference B, paragraph 9). 2. The core part of the draft Editions 1.0.0 (English version only) of these Product Specifications is now available on the IHO website at: www.iho.int > Standards & Publications > Draft Publications Awaiting Approval by Member States. The main parts of the Product Specifications are supplemented by technical documents and data (Data Classification and Encoding Guide, Application Schema, Feature Catalogue, GML Scheme, GML Data Format, Validation Checks, Test Sample Data Set) that are available as zip files on the IHO website at: www.iho.int > HSSC > NIPWG > Miscellaneous > NIPWG Product Specifications > Links. Comments template forms are also provided under this link, for convenience. 3. As reported in References A and B, and in order to make possible the launch of the system implementation phase, Member States are requested to take into account the endorsement of the HSSC and to consider the adoption of Editions 1.0.0 of S-122 and S-123 by providing their reply on the Voting Form, provided in Annex A, at their earliest convenience and no later than 30 November 2018. 4. It is worth noting that the operational implementation of S-122 and S-123 by the Hydrographic Offices, for the production of S-122 and S-123 datasets, will be considered when Edition 2.0.0 of both Product Specifications are approved, expected in 2020 at the earliest. However, Edition 1.0.0 is required to provide the industry, namely data production software houses and ECDIS manufacturers with a sound technical basis to start an upgrade process of their respective products towards handling of such datasets. Bathymetry –the foundation for sustainable seas, oceans and waterways 5. The strategy and the necessary steps for the transition from paper based products to S-100 compliant datasets is up for consideration. It is planned to address the issues of world-wide production, qualification, validation, and distribution of these and other S-100-based products at the 2nd meeting of the IHO Council (see Reference C).
