Subject: workshop on bathymetric data processing for nautical products
Dear NSHC and BSHC Members,
based on NSHC and BSHC Conferences discussions, Germany has the honour to arrange a technical
workshop on bathymetric data processing for nautical products.
Considering that the capability of surveying systems has improved, the volume of surveying data grows.
At the same time Hydrographic Offices are challenged to satisfy user requirements for more up-to-date
and more detailed nautical bathymetry. The provision of these data requires the development of
efficient solutions.
Nowadays, software tools to manage a diversity of cartographic tasks e.g. the automated generation of
contour lines have matured.
Furthermore, different projects have been initiated to improve the navigation with the provision of high
resolution bathymetric data in congested waterways.
The BSH recognises a common workshop of data producers and software developers as an excellent
opportunity to share ideas and knowledge in order to get valuable impulses for improved chart
production.
The BSH is pleased to invite your technical staff to a two-day workshop from the 9–10 April 2019 at the
BSH Hamburg, Germany.
During the first day Hydrographic Offices are called to present their current processing of bathymetric
data for nautical charts.
Furthermore, we would like to offer software developers the opportunity to present their current
developments and future plans related to the processing of bathymetric data. In order to prepare the
second day agenda, we would kindly ask you to provide proposals which topics or questions should be
discussed.
As an initial list of topics BSH would like to address the following questions:
- What kinds of input data are used? (single beam, multi beam, laser scan, …)
- How can different surveying data be merged?
- How are the contour lines generated?
- Which metadata are needed?
- How to provide a variety of nautical products with automatic derived contour lines?
- Which common requirements can be found for the S-102 product specification?
Based on the diversity of topics, it is under consideration to conduct small and parallel working groups
during the second day.
The results of the workshop should be reported to NSHC, BSHC and HSSC.
Detailed logistics will be provided at a later date.
