Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
it is our pleasure and honour to cordially invite you to the opening of the European Capital of
Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024.
20 January 2024, Bad Ischl
Start of the Opening Ceremony: 5 p.m.
For the first time in the almost 40-year history of European Capitals of Culture, the title has been
awarded to an Inner-Alpine region. The Salzkammergut with its 23 municipalities, all with their
different challenges and ideas, is an example for Europe and proves that despite all the differences,
it is possible to work on the future together. The European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut
2024 can thus be seen as a role model for Europe.
In 2024, art and cultural initiatives can be experienced in numerous places in the Salzkammergut - a
colourful, reflective mixture of regional impulses, local and international artists, sustainable thinking,
valuing tradition and at the same time sharpening the view of how the future can be shaped with
cultural and natural resources. The programme of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl
Salzkammergut 2024 establishes a balance between these areas of tension in the following four
programme lines: "POWER AND TRADITION", "CULTURE IN MOTION", "SHARING
SALZKAMMERGUT - The Art of Travelling" and "GLOBALOCAL - Building The New”. Salzkammergut
2024 deals with important topics of our region, Europe and the world, sets new impulses, highlights
the diversity of historically rooted and contemporary art and culture and connects the region
internationally.
We would be pleased if you accept our invitation to the opening of the European Capital of Culture
Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. On the following page you can take a look at the programme of the
opening. Please register with Hannah Kickert (

until end of November 2023.
Yours sincerely,

Opening Ceremony of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl - Salzkammergut 2024
Vienna, 9. November 2023
Dear Minister Purga,
Together with the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl - Salzkammergut 2024, we are
honoured and pleased to invite you to the Opening Ceremony on 20 January 2024.
Following an almost forty-year tradition, Austria will be celebrating the European Capital of
Culture for the third time, in 2024 together with Bodø and Tartu. For the first time in the
history of the European Capitals of Culture, the rural alpine space will play the key role. The
region will have the unique opportunity to enter into an inspiring European and
international dialogue and to use art and culture to shape the potential that rural areas hold
in urgent issues such as digitalization, migration and climate change.
Please find all detailed information on the Opening Ceremony on 20 January 2024 in the
attached invitation letter by the managing directors Elisabeth Schweeger and Manuela
Reichert. We are looking forward to welcoming you at the opening festivities.
Best regards
Werner Kogler Andrea Mayer
