IHO NOMINATION
Reference: IHO Circular Letter 23/2018 dated 6 March - FIG-IHO-ICA International Board on Standards of
Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC) – Vacancy for an
IHO Representative
Dear Hydrographer,
1. In response to IHO Circular Letter 23/2018 dated 6 March, as referenced, the IHO Secretariat received
five nominations to fill the vacant IHO position on the FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of
Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC). The five nominations were:
Prof Dr Harald STERNBERG (Germany),
Dr Paola PICCO (Italy),
First Admiral Hanafiah HASSAN (Malaysia),
Captain Leonel PEREIRA MANTEIGAS (Portugal),
Mr Yong BAEK (Republic of Korea)
2. The IHO Secretariat is pleased to note such a significant interest in the IBSC and expresses its gratitude
to the Member States who all nominated well-qualified candidates.
3. Following previous practice, the Curricula Vitae of the candidates were reviewed carefully by the IHO
Secretariat in consultation with the Chair of the IBSC. Taking into account expertise, seniority, academic
achievements, current roles and potential contribution to the IBSC activities, the IHO Secretariat agreed on the
selection of Captain Leonel PEREIRA MANTEIGAS to fill the vacant IHO position.
4. Unless an objection is raised by a Member State, the selection of Captain PEREIRA MANTEIGAS
will be effective 1 September 2018. The new updated membership list of IBSC expected to be effective from
1 September 2018 is provided at Annex.
