Dear Hydrographer,
1. The adoption by the IHO Member States of Edition 6.0.0 of the IHO Standard S-58 - ENC
Validation Checks was announced by Reference A. Reference A also announced the approval by
Member States of the implementation date for Edition 6.0.0 of S-58 to be set to 12 months after the
adoption of Edition 6.0.0, and declared the implementation date to be 01 June 2018. After the
implementation date, it would be required that ENC data must not contain any critical error, so as to
provide a minimum standard to which all ENCs must comply.
2. Reference B announced that, due to the implementation and testing of S-58 Edition 6.0.0 by
validation software implementers, data producers and Regional ENC Coordination Centres (RENCs), a
few erroneous checks have been identified that result in critical errors being reported for valid ENC data.
Reference B also announced that, as a result of these erroneous checks, the implementation date for
Edition 6.0.0 of S-58 of 01 June 2018 had been cancelled.
3. At its 10th meeting in May 2018, the Hydrographic Services and Standards Committee (HSSC)
endorsed revisions to Edition 6.0.0 of S-58. (Reference C). The HSSC also approved the entry into force
of S-58 Edition 6.1.0 to be 12 months from its adoption by IHO Member States; and tasked the ENC
Working Group to finalize the draft revision and forward it to the IHO Secretariat for circulation to IHO
Member States, for their consideration and approval (Reference D).
4. The draft Edition 6.1.0 document and a marked up “redline” version are now available on the
IHO website at: www.iho.int > Standards & Publications > Draft Publications Awaiting Approval by
Member States > S-58 (English version only).

5. Member States are requested to take into account the endorsement of the HSSC and to consider
the adoption of Edition 6.1.0 of S-58 by providing their reply on the Voting Form, provided in Annex,
at their earliest convenience and no later than 31 August 2018.
