IHO File N° S3/2641 CIRCULAR LETTER 29/2018 18 April 2018 GEBCO SUB-COMMITTEE ON UNDERSEA FEATURE NAMES (SCUFN) - APPOINTMENT OF NEW MEMBERS References: A. IHO CL 57/2017 dated 2 November – GEBCO SCUFN Vacancies for four IHO representatives. B. SCUFN Terms of Reference and Rules of Procedures (SCUFN TORs and ROPs). Dear Hydrographer, 1. In response to Reference A, the IHO Secretariat received six nominations to fill the four vacant IHO positions on the GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN). The six nominations were: Cdr Walter Luis REYNOSO-PERALTA (Argentina) Cdr Amit PANT (India) Dr Yasuhiko OHARA (Japan) Capt Najhan MD SAID (Malaysia) Capt Abubakar ABDULLAHI MUSTAPHA (Nigeria) Mr Trent PALMER (United States of America) 2. The IHO Secretariat is pleased to see such a significant interest in the SCUFN and expresses its gratitude to the Member States who all nominated suitably-qualified candidates. 3. Following previous practice, the Curricula Vitae of the candidates were reviewed carefully by the IHO Secretariat and the Chair of the SCUFN, Dr Hans Werner SCHENKE. Taking into account the selection criteria listed in Reference A, background, expertise, academic achievements, current roles in naming and potential contribution to the SCUFN activities, geographic distribution of the current SCUFN members (as far as possible) and possible support of the candidates for attending the future SCUFN meetings by nominating States; the IHO Secretariat, with the agreement of the Chair of the SCUFN and in close consultation with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO as stated in Reference B (Article 2.1.1), unanimously agreed on the selection of the following candidates: Cdr Walter Luis REYNOSO-PERALTA (Argentina) Dr Yasuhiko OHARA (Japan) Capt Najhan MD SAID (Malaysia) Mr Trent Palmer (USA) 4. The appointments of the new SCUFN members will be effective from the end of the 31st SCUFN meeting (SCUFN-31), scheduled in October 2018 in Wellington, New Zealand. It should be noted that elections for the positions of new Chair and Vice-Chair will be conducted at the end of SCUFN-31. Those who intend to apply for these positions within SCUFN are kindly invited to inform the SCUFN Secretariat ([email protected]) at their earliest convenience. Bathymetry - the Foundation for Sustainable Seas, Oceans and Waterways 5. It is also reminded that the selected experts are expected to be supported and funded by their respective national organizations to attend the SCUFN Meetings. 6.
