Dear Ambassador,
l am writing to invite your country to propose a participant with expertise in
intangible cultural héritage safeguarding to take part in thé forthcoming
expert meeting to reflect on a broader implementation of Article 18 of
thé 2003 Convention for thé Safeguarding of thé Intangible Cultural
Héritage (19 to 21 April 2023, Stockholm, Sweden).
This new reflection is an initiative that resulted from thé earlier global
reflection, undertaken between 2018 and 2022, on thé listing mechanisms
of thé 2003 Convention for thé Safeguarding of thé Intangible Cultural
Héritage.
Thé reflection topics as defined by thé seventeenth session of thé
Intergovernmental Committee (Décision 17. COM 10; see also document
LHE/22/17. COM10)are:
Topic 1 : Improving thé access to and increasing thé visibility of thé Register
of Good Safeguarding Practices
Topic 2: Towards thé création of an 'obsen/atory' for sharing good
safeguarding practices
Topic 3: Any other issues to be identified
With thé generous support of thé Kingdom of Sweden, this expert meeting
is convened to lay thé ground for thé meeting of thé Open-ended
intergovernmental working group (4 to 6 July 2023, UNESCO
Headquarters) which is entrusted by thé Intergovernmental Committee for
thé Safeguarding of thé Intangible Cultural Héritage to explore new ways to
better and more broadly share safeguarding expériences which best reflect
thé principles and objectives of thé 2003 Convention (see enclosed timeline
of thé reflection).
Thé gathering of experts in question is organizedas a category VI meeting.
According to UNESCO terminology, this means that thé experts will
participate in a private capacity and not as représentatives ofany particular

government or organization. Moreover, thé recommendations made during
thé meeting will not be ascribed to any participant by name.

recommendation of an expert does not guarantee his or her participation in
thé expert meeting. Thé suggested experts will be appointed by thé
Director-Generalof UNESCO,taking into accounttheirprofiles, expérience,
geographical balance and gender.
