In collaboration with TalTech and Tartu University, this project aims to create a dynamic platform for scientific exploration, outreach, and knowledge exchange. The project name "ERNEST" does not only mean European Researchers' Night in Estonia but also stands as a tribute to two luminaries who epitomized excellence in their respective fields—Nobel laureates Ernest Rutherford and Ernest Hemingway. Within this name, we embrace the profound essence of knowledge, reason, and creativity, each radiating like a beacon of intellectual brilliance. ERNEST offers invaluable opportunities to shape the future, installing essential values like curiosity, critical thinking, and environmental consciousness in the next generation. By connecting researchers with students and the public, these projects foster a deep appreciation for science, inspire young minds, and empower them to address pressing global issues like climate change. In doing so, they contribute to building a more sustainable and scientifically literate society, where the drive for positive change is fueled by knowledge, curiosity, and collaboration. ERNEST activities align seamlessly with the goals of both ERN and Researchers at School. In this project, researchers engage with students in hands-on experiments, discussions, and educational outreach focused on climate change and environmental sustainability. These activities not only provide valuable knowledge but also empower young learners to take an active role in addressing climate problems, digital age challenges, gender equality in science, scientific solutions for rural problems, influence of science on recovering the Baltic sea and rivers in Estonia, and medical solutions for health problems in Europe via Master-Classes, Science Experiments, Challenges, and quizzes. Evaluation Summary Report Evaluation Result Total score: 12.50 (Threshold: 10 ) Criterion 1 - Excellence Score: 4.50 (Threshold: 3 / 5.00 , Weight: - ) 101161053/ERNEST-02/02/2024-11:27:38 1/4 Associated with document Ref. Ares(2024)794974 - 02/02/2024 The following aspects will be taken into account, to the extent that the proposed work corresponds to the description in the work programme: - Clarity and pertinence of the project’s objectives. - Quality of the proposed coordination and/or support measures including soundness of methodology. Strengths: - The proposal sets clear objectives perfectly in line with the work programme of the MSCA and Citizens call. Activities are clearly and coherently formulated to address on the EU priorities such as the Green Deal, SDGs or EU Missions, which are relevant to the objectives outlined in the call. - The project successfully promotes gender balance and inclusiveness. The gender equality plan, activities and efforts are highly relevant. - Paying particular attention to creativity and art in conjunction with science investigation is an innovative aspect, which is very good as this helps bringing science closer to the public and captures the interest of those who might not have a strong interest in science. - Using STEAM, Growth Mindset, and Sociology of Knowledge approaches as well as the involvement of MSCA researchers from universities increase the quality of the proposed activities. - The overall approach is very good, particularly taking science to public spaces, while inviting the public to visit the university premises, which will have a positive impact on the involved organization's visibility. - The common overarching theme of “European science for a bright future” is a good unifying slogan, which ensures consistency across the various event locations. - Researchers at school initiatives are planned before the ERN, which is a positive aspect, and includes an extensive network of schools in Estonia. - The methodology is sound, grounded on previous experiences and designed to respond to the different needs of the audience. This is a good approach to ensure the inclusion of people. Weaknesses: - The project does not elaborate well the process through which researchers and trainers build a scientific engagement effectively with target groups and how researchers will acquire the educational capabilities necessary for the "Researchers at school" initiative. - Measures or estimates of the pupils/students who will participate are addressed insufficiently. Similarly, it is not clear the number of teachers who will be assisted in approaching scientific content. Criterion 2 - Impact Score: 4.50 (Threshold: 3 / 5.00 , Weight: - ) The following aspects will be taken into account, to the extent that the proposed work corresponds to the description in the work programme: - Credibility of the pathways to achieve the expected outcomes and impacts specified in the work programme, and the likely scale and significance of the contributions from the project. - Suitability and quality of the measures to maximise expected outcomes and impacts, as set out in the dissemination and exploitation plan, including communication activities. Strengths: - Planning some activities far from the scientific centres (e.g., on public places, in shopping malls, city squares and cultural venues) and in different locations of the country increases public interest. This is particularly relevant to have impact on audiences with no easy access to events. - The planned activities combining education with entertainment are credible to enhance promotion and awareness. - By providing participants with an opportunity to attend online activities (via the webpage and social media) to avoid overlapping between scheduled activities is a good and vibrant approach to attract many people. - Planned target groups to be influenced are researchers, students, children, teenagers, adults, and organizations, which is sufficient complex of groups. - Involvement of MSCA researchers fosters the visibility of the EU projects excellence. In addition, EU corners are at all venues, promoting a better understanding of the EU and its priorities. - The dissemination to the science engagement community is a positive aspect, promoting collaboration and synergies with other organizations. This approach allows for the sharing of practices and enhances the overall visibility of MSCA and Citizens as an EU-wide initiative. Weaknesses: - The estimated number of people reached by the awareness campaign is not sufficiently justified. Criterion 3 - Quality and efficiency of the implementation Score: 3.50 (Threshold: 3 / 5.00 , Weight: - ) The following aspects will be taken into account, to the extent that the proposed work corresponds to the description in the work programme: - Quality and effectiveness of the work plan, assessment of risks, and appropriateness of the effort assigned to work packages, and the resources overall. - Capacity and role of each participant, and extent to which the consortium as a whole brings together the necessary expertise. Strengths: - A risk mitigation strategy is in place to ensure smooth running of the project. For instance, the project proposes proper fitting mitigation measures in case for unobtainability of empirical data and insufficient responses to data collection tools by research community and target audiences. - The resources are appropriately allocated to the work packages and are in line with the relevant objectives and deliverables. - The consortium representing academia, civil society and education institutions (primary/secondary) brings the necessary expertise, experience (e.g., having organized similar successful events in the past) and knowledge to implement the project. - The involvement with different stakeholders contributes to fostering the visibility of the EU projects excellence and promotes a better understanding of the EU and its priorities. Weaknesses: - A sufficiently granular work plan, a timely planning and a relevant schedule of activities and resources is elaborated insufficiently. For example, it is not entirely clear at which locations and venues and at what frequency the specific, proposed events will take place. - Researcher’s Night activities are not elaborated sufficiently. - The interrelation among WPs and the overall timeline of the action is not clearly specified.
