Mariya GABRIEL
Commissioner for Innovation,
Research, Culture, Education and Youth
Brussels, 10th February 2023
Dear Minister Hartman,
I would like to invite you to join me in launching a new initiative, the Day of European
Authors, with the first edition taking place on 27 March 2023.
This action will be organised annually, as a celebration knitting together the book and
education sectors and aspiring to reconnect young Europeans with reading and in
particular help them discover the diversity of literature coming from our European
countries. The objectives of the action will thereof be twofold: promote European
literature and encourage reading, in particular in secondary schools.
The Day of European Authors aims at showcasing literature as a way to expose
young people to the richness of the European culture but also as a tool for individual
empowerment, contributing to equipping learners with the adequate skillset to engage
with ongoing social and personal challenges through reading.
To celebrate the Day of European Authors, I am foreseeing three different activities
which will all take place on 27 March 2023:
1. Reading in schools.
Secondary schools across the EU will be invited, in particular via the
eTwinning community, to organise reading aloud sessions with European
authors. I will be myself attending one of those sessions in a school in Sofia.
2. Tour of European authors.
The Commission will organise a tour of European authors who will visit
schools and other places, such as libraries and bookstores.
Mr Piret Hartman
Minister of Culture
3. A conference on reading promotion.
The conference will take place in Sofia, on 27 March and will bring together
representatives of EU Member States ministries of Education and Culture in
charge of reading policies, representatives of the book sectors and
organisations active in the field of reading promotion. The objective will be to
share experiences and practices on reading promotion actions and to
contribute to the development of a stronger European dimension those efforts.
The day is also an opportunity to emphasise the importance of the programs,
in particular Erasmus+ and Creative Europe, and numerous initiatives for the
promotion of reading implemented in individual EU Member States and
express great appreciation for the efforts of your countries.
I would be very grateful to count on your collaboration and support in promoting this
new initiative within your school communities. My objective is to mobilise a great
number of schools across the EU.
I would be grateful if you could also encourage representatives of your ministries to take
part in the conference taking place on 27 March.
