Subject: EU IHO NETWORK meeting in MALTA-Maritime Spatial Planning
Attachments: Flyer_EMODonet EN.pdf
Importance: High
Flag Status: Flagged
Dear european Hydrographic Offices,
As you know, IHO EU network was accepted as observer in the European “Maitime Spatial Planning (MSP) expert
group” coordinated by the DG MARE, all the EU countries are represented in this working group.
The objective of our representation is to give visibility to the activities of the EU HOs which are naturally connected to
all European maritime strategies especially the Maritime Spatial Planning.
The next meeting of this expert group will be organised in Malta on 14th June afternoon and 15th morning, in the
umbrella of the EU Malta Presidency. On 15th afternoon and 16th morning, the DG MARE will organize a meeting on
the “land‐sea interactions”, what is totally connected to our results of Coastal Mapping project.
To take this occasion to meet the members of the MSP working group and the DGMARE in the context of the Malta
Presidency and demonstrate, by our presence, the reality of the IHO networking, we have the pleasure to inform you
about the organization of a
Special edition of the EU HOs networking
on 14th of June, 9h‐16h in the meeting Center in Floriana, Malta,
AT THE INVITATION OF THE MALTA HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE.
We are invited too, to participate to the meetings of 15‐16th June on “land‐sea interactions” organized by the DG
MARE.
1
For this “special edition”, we would want to invite all the European HOs to join us in Malta to participate to a
meeting dedicated to the expertises of the HOs for Maritime Spatial planning and land‐sea interactions, that will be
the theme of the workshop organized by the DGMARE.
It will be the occasion to increase our coordination for the involvment of the HOs in the maritime EU policies and work
on the follow on of the results of the Coastal Mapping project, designed by our network in partnership with the
DGMARE and with the fruitful participation of the CPMR. The « European Strategy for the acquisition of high
resolution bathymetry » presented to the EU parlementaries on 7th of February in Brussels
(http://www.searica.eu/fr/evenements/conference/towards‐a‐eu‐strategy‐for‐coastal‐mapping), needs now to enter
into its next phase for what the HOs must be major actors.
We need to validate the next steps with all the HOs which would want to be involved in. The English version of the
presentation of the results is joined.
We hope your participation in Malta and we thank again our colleagues from Malta Hydrographic office for their
invitation.

growth, but also highly sensitive from an
environmental point of view, strong action must
be taken to greatly improve knowledge of these
areas.
For that reason, the coastal mapping project
strongly recommends that a European
Strategy with the above 3 axis and 3 pillars
actions be implemented. For the sake of
efficiency, the project team also recommends
platform sharing and/or organising common
campaigns for data acquisition and a
systematic requirement that any EU funded
project including data acquisition, must respect
standards and ensure data capitalisation and
promotion of good practice to maximize the
benefits of community/crowd sourced data.
