Invitation to the 2 Annual Oceanographic Survey Vessels Conference | 27-29 June 2017 | London, UK
Dear Mr Kivimae,
It is my great pleasure to formally invite you to attend the second annual Oceanographic Survey Vessels conference,
taking place in London on 27-29 June 2017, as our guest and speaker.
Building on the success of our inaugural OSV event in 2016 - the first of its kind designed exclusively for a naval audience
- we are now looking ahead to the next gathering of the international naval and hydrographic communities this June. As
you’ll be aware, the many conferences and expos on the subject of oceanographic and hydrographic survey vessels are
overwhelmingly scientific, and not designed to engage a naval audience. Having understood this need for closer
international naval cooperation on OSV strategy and the employment of survey data, we developed an event that places
regional and hemispheric cooperation at the heart of its agenda, with senior commanders attending to discuss current OSV
design requirements, acquisition challenges, and operational case-studies. Former keynote speakers have included:
Vice Admiral Bruno Frachon, Director, SHOM
Vice Admiral Luiz Fernando Palmer Fonseca, Special Advisor to the Director, Brazilian Navy
Captain Bongkoch Samosorn, Commander of the Hydrographic Flotilla, Royal Thai Navy
Rear Admiral Pham Xuan Diep, COS & Deputy Commander in Chief, People’s Navy of Vietnam
Commodore Daryanto, Chief Hydrographer, Dinas Hidro – Oseanografi, Indonesian Navy
Commodore Mir Imdadul Haque, Directorate of Hydrography, Operations Branch, Bangladesh Navy
Commander John Loog, Head Department Plans, Projects and Surveys, Royal Netherlands Navy
With these objectives in mind, I’m pleased to invite you to present your perspective on how navies can better design
and employ oceanographic/hydrographic vessels and survey data for maritime safety and securiy – a vital issue to this
community of both end users and industry – and the design and capability requirements of the modern hydrographer. I
hope you will agree that this presents an excellent opportunity to brief the global hydrographic community, as well as to
hear from other key naval allies on the agenda.
Typically keynote presentations last for 30 minutes, with 20 minutes for prepared remarks and 10 for Q&A which is
typically held ‘off the record’. As a speaker, attendance at the conference will of course be free and we would also like
to offer you three complementary passes for your delegation.
In order to assist in planning the agenda and coordinating the many speakers, I would very much appreciate an
indication of your agreement, in principle, to attend by 27 January 2017. However, we appreciate your busy schedule,
so if you are personally unable to attend then I welcome the provision of a senior ranking designee to observe the
proceedings on your behalf.
I sincerely hope you will be available to join us in London next year, and look forward to your response.
Very respectfully,
Hannah Croft

Dear Mr Taivo Kivimae,
Greetings from London, I hope this message finds you well.
To briefly introduce myself, I am the Director of the forthcoming Oceanographic and Hydrographic
Survey Vessel symposium at Defence IQ, a meeting that you may be familiar with.
We are hosting the second annual OSV conference this 27-29 June, which, unlike many of the
conferences and trade shows in this field, focuses specifically on survey vessels and their role and
employment within broader naval strategy. As such, I work almost exclusively with navies, coast guards
and other maritime agencies from across the world operating, or planning to operate, these survey
vessels. Our objective is to promote a deeper sense of understanding of the utility of these vessels in
contemporary maritime operations, as well as promote multilateralism and capacity building. For your
reference, please find attached the conference brochure from the 2016 event (the 2017 agenda is
currently in development); given its subject matter I hope it will be of interest to you.
In this spirit of international cooperation, it brings me great pleasure to formally invite you to attend this
year as our honoured guest and keynote speaker. Please find attached a formal letter of invitation for
your reference.
In the meantime, I remain at your disposal should you have any questions at all and look forward to
hearing from you.
With kind regards,
Hannah
